So Much for Hard-to-Putt Greens

Before THE PLAYERS commenced, problems with the greens monopolized the information.

Well, that turned out to be much ado about nothing. Most of the pros had no trouble with the greens... and Martin Kaymer had the least trouble of all.

Martin Kaymer

All Kaymer did was tie the match low-round report Thursday with a bogey-unfastened 63 (-nine). Oh, and he set a new document for lowest nine-hole score with a 29 (-7). That's all. Ho-hum, some other day at the workplace.

Of path, Kaymer wasn't the simplest one having his manner available. You ought to point to Russell Henley, who shot sixty five with a double bogey. Or Sang-Moon Bae taking pictures sixty six. Or Lee Westwood with a bogey-free 67. (Or Jordan Spieth or Sergio, who have been each in that large institution of 67s.) Even Justin Rose, who has a fairly hideous report at TPC Sawgrass, posted sixty seven.

True, there had been horror stories as nicely. Phil shot 3-over and Adam Scott shot 5-over, just for starters. But both of them were spinning that tale quite a piece this season, have not they? It's no longer this sort of shock for maximum people. (Undesirable, yes; stunning, no.)

THE PLAYERS seems to have found something that no other tournament has had this year: Big names in contention. It's still early in the week but it's been a pleasant change

However, as a great deal as I enjoy seeing the new guys wreck thru for their first wins, wins have a tendency to have more which means when they're gained towards installed stars. We haven't seen the ones stars excel very frequently this season (Bubba being the primary exception) and, when you upload the damage-associated absences of pinnacle gamers like Tiger and Jason Day, it does appear a chunk anticlimactic. I'm searching ahead to seeing an established player step up and win this one.

But established star or not, there was one common refrain amongst them all: Receptive greens. I guess when you can hit the ball close to the hole and stop it there, greens don't need to be all that smooth! I wonder what the Tour thinks about that? I don't know about you but I don't want them to just give this event to somebody.

But I doubt the tender conditions will last lots longer. We might not be seeing any "better than maximum" moments if it does... And I doubt the Tour desires that anymore than it needs invisible stars.

And in any case, it is difficult to bitch approximately the veggies after you tore the location up for one spherical.
