The September 2009 issue of Golf Digest included an article called Ten Rules for Becoming a Chipping Virtuoso by Raymond Floyd. Those of you who follow my blog know I'm a big fan of Raymond's approach to strategy, so I thought I'd pass on his chipping tips list as well.

Raymond Floyd

His policies are pretty easy although you may not come upon them very often. I've introduced a few feedback to make sure you apprehend what he has in thoughts.

  1. Find your personal way.

Simply put, Ray says everybody has to learn the way they chip satisfactory. All the best chippers were in the end self-taught, because the "right" manner to chip does not in shape every person.

  • Get your stare on.
  • Ray says his stare passed off when he got misplaced inside the second and let his imagination take over. He stopped wondering technique and started to see the photographs in his mind.

  • Underreach at deal with.
  • Don't stretch your fingers out so they may be overextended. If you do, your actual swing will mis-hit the ball.

  • The butt of the membership in no way moves returned.
  • You may want the butt of the club in the back of the ball on positive sand shots, however no longer while you chip. If the again of your lead hand faces the sky at effect, you may mis-hit the chip.

  • Experience a mild-bulb moment.
  • Anybody can inform you that you need to practice your quick recreation. But till you have that moment of recognition that YOU need to practice, you won't come to be as excellent as you could be.

  • Get the ball rolling quick.
  • The better you fly the ball, the tougher it hits the floor and might jump off-line. Keeping the ball low so it rolls greater enables the ball song toward the hole better.

  • Know while to take the flag out.
  • If you have got a very good lie, irrespective of whether or not you're inside the rough or no longer, take the flag out. At least, that is what Raymond did.

  • Become a exquisite mudder.
  • The ball behaves in a different way while the climate's nasty so exercise chipping in moist weather. Most players never do.

  • Learn the "rut-iron"chip.
  • This is the chip shot where you stand toward the ball, tilt the clubhead up at the toe and open the face a chunk. Use it while you chip from the hard. The grass is less probable to seize the membership and twist the face.

  • Save your back -- hit five at a time.
  • Move to a brand new chipping spot after each 5 balls, so you should straighten up and circulate around. Your back will thank you! It's an thrilling list and, no matter how properly you are, I guess you discovered some thing that you did not recognise. And this is no marvel -- he's a World Golf Hall of Famer, in spite of everything!
