I mentioned the day before today that Ian Poulter had passed on a threat to guard his identify on the Houston Open. Now we understand why.
Ian Poulter won the Italian Open twice in 3 years, lower back in 2000 and 2002. The 2d win came at Olgiata Golf Club in Rome. This 12 months the Italian Open returns to that site.
In addition, the Italian Open is a Rolex Series occasion. Poults sits at #15 within the Race to Dubai, which Rolex sponsors.
Furthermore, there are plenty of Ryder Cup factors available this week. Poults is currently 92nd inside the Euro factors listing and I could not find him on the World points list, which is going down to 110. Clearly getting a few factors at the Italian Open could flow him up the chart fastest.

Given what is up for grabs this week, I suppose I can understand him skipping his name defense in Houston. The ET website has even chosen Poults as one among their Fantasy Three to watch.
